Call for measures to drive farming efficiency in Vitebsk Oblast

MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) – We need to reach efficient performance of agricultural companies in Vitebsk Oblast as no debts will be written off, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting held on 28 January to discuss ways to improve the situation in the agricultural industry of Vitebsk Oblast , BelTA has learned.

“There will be no debt forgiveness. The beauty of a debt is in its payment. Pay off the debts. The government can only provide some help to make it easier for you,” the president said.

The head of state reiterated his demand to upgrade the agricultural sector of Vitebsk Oblast. “Modernization needs to cover the main area, crop cultivation in Vitebsk Oblast, a zone of critical farming,” he said. Keeping in mind the climate and soil characteristics of the region, it is, for example, inefficient to cultivate grain maize, other crops in many of its districts. That means the focus needs to be on milk and meat production.

“Focusing on the needs and processers was the main thing we did right about Vitebsk Oblast. We have made collective farms (kolkhozes and sovkhozes) part of holding companies. Give us milk and meat. If they do not understand how much do you need, provide them with tasks, plans, forecasts so that they knew the volumes they need to provide the processing companies with. These plans need to meet your business activity in full so that you could pay off the debts,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Every agricultural company of the region needs an individual development program. “The programs need to be revised at the end of each year. The programs should be transparent, which will make it possible to take a look at the results and draw conclusions: whether the company can pay off its debts, how the company operates, and whether its operation provides better living conditions for people,” the head of state said.
