Belarus to turn unused state-owned property into technoparks

MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) – Unused facilities of state-run enterprises in Minsk and the regional capitals will be given to technoparks, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed the 6th Belarusian People's Congress in Minsk on 11 February, BelTA has learned.

“We will set up technoparks at unused facilities of state-run enterprises in Minsk and the regional centers. This will contribute to import-substitution efforts,” the president stressed. As for using domestic resources, the head of state noted that plans are in place to implement projects to process them in towns and rural areas. For example, a fully functional furniture cluster creating 1,000 new jobs will emerge in Ivatsevichi. There will be one or two similar projects to process domestic raw materials in every district, the Belarusian president pointed out.

The backbone of regional development will be the policy to increase attractiveness of living and working outside the capital, Aleksandr Lukashenko said. Plans are in place for comprehensive development of eleven large cities, including Borisov, Molodechno, Baranovichi, Bobruisk, and Polotsk. “We should heavily invest in these cities during this five-year period. So far, we have received at least two or three proposals for large-scale projects from every region and calculated their funding,” the head of state noted.
