Belarus ready to implement road construction projects with Ukraine

MINSK, 26 September (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to cooperate with Ukraine in expanding the road network if there are viable projects, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with representatives of Ukrainian mass media, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian head of state noted that the main motorways which run through the territory of Belarus are well-maintained. Some of them are under renovation, for example, the motorway from Minsk to Vilnius. This project is implemented with support of the European Investment Bank. “We want to build a road in the south of Belarus, from Gomel to Brest, parallel to the border with Ukraine,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “There is a road there, but it is not meant for a large flow of traffic. We could redirect freight traffic from China, Kazakhstan, and Russia to this road,” he added. The project to build the new road will be a public-private project.

“Our road network is fine, but we want to add another three or four routes,” the president said. According to him, if routes from Ukraine via Belarus will be economically justified, Belarus will be “ready to start financing and implementing the appropriate projects straight away”. Especially taking into account that Belarus has a reliable modern road construction technology and skilled specialists in this field. Belarusian road construction organizations already have experience in renovating and upgrading motorways in Ukraine.
