Belarus president urges to create environment for healthy competition

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – The government needs to create an environment for healthy fair competition, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he delivered his Annual State of the Nation Address on 19 April, BelTA has learned.

“In order to curb price growth, I demand that the government create an environment for healthy fair competition. Some monopolistic industries make attempts to dictate prices and tariffs. I ask you to suppress this price collusions, to level off conditions, and cancel any individual privileges. I instruct the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade, the State Control Committee, trade unions and other authorized government bodies to monitor the observance of the law and take up necessary measures without additional instructions from the president. Decisions should be socially responsible,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

People's incomes and their growth remain among the priority goals for the government. Certain categories of workers in the scientific, education, healthcare, and construction sectors saw wage rises last year. However, as the recent petitions have showed, people are still concerned about the prospects for its further growth. The focus should be on low-wage workers.

“The government must ensure that the average wage in the public sector stands at least at 80% to the national average,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

In his words, the average salary of $500 has been reached in the country. “It will be good if we have $1000 one day, keeping the current social security level in the country. This is the task not only for the government but also for the people, labor collectives, and enterprises where they work,” the president emphasized.

“We have set this minimum [$500]. However, there are still low-paid specialists such as social workers, kindergarten assistants and others. The goal is to raise the wages to the average. Let those who earn $500-600 today move further by themselves. A worker in the kindergarten cannot earn extra income. We must keep this in mind,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

In his words, we have reached the goal to have the average salary at $500 in the equivalent in the country. “It will be good to have it at $1000 one day, preserving the current social security level in the country. This is the task not only for the government but also for the people, labor collectives, and enterprises where they work,” the president emphasized.
