Belarus president: Perfect weather for agricultural work

MINSK DISTRICT, 20 March (BelTA) – The weather conditions right now are ideal for agricultural work, including for the spring sowing campaign. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement as he visited the private R&D company Adani on 20 March, BelTA has learned.

Reporters wondered how the abnormally warm winter and overall climate changes will affect agriculture and whether Belarus is ready for climate cataclysms. In response Aleksandr Lukashenko said Belarusian farmers are ready for climate changes and today's situation is simply ideal for the sowing campaign.

“This year's situation is ideal. Why? Because we had rains during warm winter, this is why there is a large reserve of moisture in soil despite the lack of snow,” the head of state stated.

The president stressed that due to such favorable weather it is necessary to finish the early spring crops sowing campaign as soon as possible and promptly proceed with spring field work as a whole. He said it was possible that the cereals harvesting campaign may be finished earlier then. “In other words, everything is ideal for now: there is enough moisture and the temperature is good,” the president concluded.

In addition to that, Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out that Belarus had been taking measures in response to the climate change for a long time. New crop varieties were mentioned. They used to grow in more southern regions in the past. Now they are grown in Belarus as well, for instance, watermelons.

“We reorganized a lot in crop farming a long time ago and we had to reorganize animal husbandry as well,” the head of state noted.
