Belarus president orders to arrange government conference by year end to discuss education

MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has given instructions to arrange an expanded-participation government conference to discuss education. The conference will gather not only representatives of the Education Ministry but also the pedagogical community and experts, BelTA learned from Belarusian Education Minister Igor Karpenko after he delivered his report to Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 26 August.

The education minister said that matters of education will have to be discussed in a broad and open format in order to make the necessary decisions taking into account the existing problems.

The head of state sketched out the rough timing for the conference – November-December. He believes it is necessary to discuss the relevant matters once the preparations are complete. Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “It is necessary to start this conversation from the bottom. We are going to gather people, who represent the face of our education system. Most likely without assistance of the Education Ministry. You are going to invite some people but most of the participants will be invited using a different approach in order to have a discussion. We need an alternative. We need different points of view. We should compare them and make the relevant decisions.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko concluded: “It may be a good idea to hold the conference after the parliamentary elections. We don't want to once again face accusations such an important conference that will shape the face of our society in the future has been scheduled in anticipation of the parliamentary elections.”

According to Igor Karpenko, the Education Ministry intends to put together a long list of questions concerning the future development of the education system ahead of the forthcoming conference. “Approaches to the possible graduation exams in schools, possible improvement of university admittance rules – the head of state has given instructions to arrange a conference involving experts. Not only those the Education Ministry will select but also representatives of the pedagogical community, including people of science, some parents in order to openly discuss matters of current interest and approaches. I think the Education Ministry will concentrate these questions, will present its vision, its understanding of how it will be done and we will dot all the i's,” he explained.
