Belarus president describes Russia as strategic partner

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – The fact that Belarusians and Russians are good neighbors has been proved by time. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement in his address to newly elected and outgoing members of both chambers of the parliament on 5 December, BelTA has learned.

The head of state noted that mass media now pay close attention to Belarusian-Russian relations while interest in the development of these relations goes far beyond the borders of these countries. “The Russian Federation is our strategic partner. Our brothers live there. It is a partner in economic, political, and military affairs. Belarusian-Russian good neighborliness has been tested by time,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.

“Yes, Russia is large. Even people among Russian leadership can be different. They have different views. Some try to put pressure due to their personal interests and other ones. I can see that. I see that and stay on top of the process. And the final decision will be made together. In accordance with their Constitution and ours,” the Belarusian leader stated.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted he often expresses regrets that some problems are pushed to the presidential level. “These problems need to be resolved before that. It is a shortcoming of the outgoing parliament. We didn't try to push for our interests on that platform too hard, primarily in Russia. And we didn't try too hard to convince Russians that we cannot afford to be on different sides of the barricade. That Belarusians and Belarus are a normal country. That Russia has no other allies like Belarus,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“It is necessary to work harder in this regard. It is necessary to get more and more Russians involved in the process. So that not only the president but MPs as well could be heard. Then the government will have no way out,” the Belarusian leader added.
