Belarus president calls for unity in face of external pressure

MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) – It is important to continue integration with Russia and in the EAEU in the face of external pressure, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the meeting with representatives of the Russian media on 14 December, BelTA has learned.

“I said to the prime ministers of the EAEU member states that this is a blessing in disguise. We should get more united, as you said, in the face of external pressure and look for our happiness here. So why is no one is looking ?,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

“With regards small problems, we should not create them first thing. What do we fight over? Okay, you will not sell us 5 billion cubic meters of gas on top of the volume we agreed. Where do you sell this gas at a time when the world is moving away from conventional hydrocarbons at the same frantic pace,” the president noted.

There are trade wars raging in the world. There is a complicated situation around the World Trade Organization as Donald Trump took up the post of the U.S. President. Belarus is the only EAEU state which is not a member of the WTO. Russia has joined the organization. Kazakhstan did it as well. Today, however, we can see that the WTO is facing problems. Statements were made at the G20 summit that the organization needs reforming. “We discussed the matter in St Petersburg not long ago. Nursultan Nazarbayev said (and Vladimir Putin supported his opinion) that Lukashenko is in a winning position again,” the head of state said.
