Belarus president ambivalent about this year's results for EAEU

ST. PETERSBURG, 6 December (BelTA) – The results of the Eurasian Economic Union performance in 2018 were mixed both from the political and economic points of views, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in St. Petersburg on 6 December, BelTA has learned.

“Today, we are taking stock of the overall work of the union this year and setting goals for the next one. With regard to the ending period, the results were mixed from the political and economic points of views,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

Among the positive developments, the president highlighted the EAEU Treaty on the Customs Code, and also Moldova' status of observer. The EAEU also signed an interim agreement leading to the free trade area with Iran, and the agreement on trade and economic cooperation with China.

“Belarus expects that the norms formalized in these documents will be fulfilled. Each of them was approved taking into account its possible economic effect in the future,” the head of state said.

In his words, there are important issues that have not yet been settled. They pertain to barriers in trade, the formation of common markets of gas and oil, the digitization of the EAEU economies, cooperation in providing space and geoinformation services.
