Belarus parliament expected to work faster to pass next year's budget documents

MINSK, 16 September (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko believes it is important for the parliament to work faster on adopting the package of budget documents for the year 2020. Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement as he met with Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko on 16 September, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed: “We have a number of most important matters left, which the current members [of the parliament] cannot handle. It has always been like that. We are about to start a new year – a fiscal one, an economic one, whatever you may call it – and in a very important political period (there is worse to come next year). This is why it is extremely necessary for us to consider and pass the main financial plans for the next year – the [social and economic] development forecast and the budget.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned he was aware of the work the relevant commissions of the parliament and individual MPs do to that effect in association with the government and the Finance Ministry. “It is a good practice. The next parliament should keep it, adopt this experience,” he believes.

Addressing the head of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament, the head of state said members of the parliament should work harder on the package of budget documents. “It is necessary to run faster, more beautifully near the finish line so that people would remember it,” he remarked.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also suggested arranging a meeting of the head of state and members of the current parliament. “It would be right of me to thank them for their work,” he said. “Everything we have done was not done by the president only. Destiny decrees it is associated with the chief executive. But Lukashenko, Andreichenko, Myasnikovich, Kochanova, and other ones didn't work alone. Thousands of people were hard at work, primarily parliamentarians. What did they work for? For stability,” the Belarusian leader stated.

He remarked that the parliament, including the period when Aleksandr Lukashenko was an MP, has seen various situations. Some situations were far from calm or stable. “You and I remember what was happening in the first independent parliament, in the second parliament, in the years of sovereign Belarus. All of that was injected into people's lives. In addition to making people nervous it was a bad example for some. I mean you and I created certain instability back then. We bear responsibility for it as well. Although we've never told people to take to the streets, we've never shouted and so on,” Aleksandr Lukashenko told Vladimir Andreichenko.

“The parliament plays a huge role in contributing stability to our society. It is not only the supreme legislative authority, but a representative one,” the head of state stressed.
