Belarus' losses due to trade wars, unfair prices, expensive loans estimated at $9.5bn

MINSK, 4 August (BelTA) – Belarus has lost $9.5 billion due to trade wars, unfair prices, and expensive loans. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement in his address to the nation and the parliament on 4 August, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted: “Results of the current period have demonstrated that strong external dependence on one or two countries makes us vulnerable, to say the least. Due to trade wars, unfair prices, and expensive loans the country has lost $9.5 billion worth of economic growth over the course of five years. The money could have been spent on pensions, scholarships, public sector salaries, and support for families. We've made conclusions. We are now implementing a strategy in order to minimize the influence of such factors by 2025.”

With this in mind a new infrastructure to deliver oil and natural gas is being created, the loan portfolio and commodity flows are being diversified, new export markets are being aggressively explored.

The president reminded that Belarus is an export-oriented country and is deeply integrated into international manufacturing ties. “At present we cannot destroy anything. We need to protect people and advance the economy forward at least by 3-4% every year. It will be the world's average growth rate,” the head of state stated.
