Belarus local authorities told to focus on living standards

MINSK, 15 January (BelTA) - The most important task of the local authorities is to improve the living standards of people, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he appointed new heads of local bodies, BelTA has learned.

The head of state recalled that 2019 and 2020 will be special years for the country, full of political events. According to him, “Belarus' sovereignty and independence are put to the test from West and East.”

“I already talked about it. We must be ready for this. But remember, no one will be able to bring us down if we work effectively. Belarusians deserve a normal life. We must improve the lives of our people while maintaining independence and sovereignty. Otherwise no one will need that sovereignty. This is the most important task for all,” the president said.

Finishing touches for Brest

The president noted that during the year he will travel around the country to see the work of local authorities, the development of the regions. He drew special attention to the situation in Brest Oblast and Gomel Oblast.

“Brest is celebrating its millennium this year. Much has been done in Brest. It needs some finishing touches to turn into the brightest gem in the necklace of Belarus. It is a western gate to the huge Eurasian region. When people cross the border, they should feel like they get into a beautiful and prosperous world,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

No more experiments for Gomel Oblast

Alexander Lukashenko is dissatisfied with the development of Gomel Oblast. The work of the regional authorities will get under scrutiny. The same pertains to Mogilev Oblast.

“The time of tests and experiments was over a long time ago. Gomel Oblast should not lag behind other regions. After all, when it comes to social security matters, we have done more for Gomel Oblast than any other region of the country. It is time to show results. The living standards in Gomel Oblast should not be worse than those in Minsk Oblast or Grodno Oblast,” the president emphasized.

Minsk should become an absolutely comfortable city

Social and economic development tasks were set for Minsk at the meeting with Minsk authorities in December 2018. Therefore, the president did not specify them again.

“I made myself clear. We have been following your actions and the feedback. People uphold the results of our meeting in general and in detail. I ask you to stick to the instructions that I gave back then. We need to turn Minsk into an absolutely comfortable city so that local residents would be proud of living in this hero-city,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

This year and in the coming years the local agenda will be dominated by the 2nd European Games, the presidential and parliamentary elections. However, this is not the key point on the agenda. “The main thing we should do this year is to landscape and tidy up our city,” he said.

Minsk Oblast authorities are too sloppy

The president added that he has been following the development of Minsk Oblast closely.

“The region lacks discipline and a proactive approach. Please, get down to work. I live in a village in Minsk Oblast and can see how things are in Logoisk District, Dzerzhinsk District, Smolevichi District,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

The head of state reminded the local authorities of punishment for corruption. The president added that not long ago the heads of Pukhovichi District and Zhodino were arrested for violations.

“You are in the president's personnel pool and are under the president's protection. However, if I see violations, especially those related to bribes and other corruption crimes, expect no mercy,” the Belarusian leader said.
