Belarus government told to fix shortage of face masks

MINSK, 7 April (BelTA) – The government must fix the shortage of means of individual protection. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko gave the relevant instruction on 7 April as he was informed about the readiness of the national healthcare system to counteract the spread of the coronavirus infection, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stated: “I've warned the prime minister and the government: if by the end of the week I am told that drugstores, shops or hospitals lack something, particularly means to protect medics, the government will be replaced.”

The president instructed the entire power vertical led by the prime minister to fix the shortage of means of individual protection within the next few days. “It is absolutely unacceptable that we cannot make something. Can't we make these simple face masks for the population? People cover their faces with scarves (it is the right thing to do), but can't we sew masks?” the head of state wondered. “It is inadmissible to say today that we have a shortage of something. This is why if these problems do exist, the power vertical led by the prime minister must fix them by Monday.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko was indignant about a surge in prices for means of protection: “It must not happen in our country! The State Control Committee should take the responsibility and crack down on these shops and drugstores. Nobody is allowed to profiteer from it! And don't tell me that prices for ginger and lemon, garlic and onion have increased. I can't believe we have a shortage of onion! Deal with it.”
