Belarus' government to help agricultural workers with housing

MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) – The government will lend a helping hand to young agricultural workers facing a housing issue, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting held on 28 January to discuss ways to improve the situation in the agricultural industry of Vitebsk Oblast, BelTA has learned.

The head of state called provision of housing a very important matter. In his view, it is necessary to resume construction of houses in agro-towns. “We have these agro-towns everywhere. Each specialist in these agro-towns, starting with the chief specialist, should be provided with a house,” the president said.

The housing construction project could be undertaken by the Domostroenie branch of Shklov-based Newsprint Mill, Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “We will lend a helping hand here. However, such houses should be built in agro-towns,” he said.

Other measures designed to support young agricultural workers included a proposal to offer primarily inactive military service to young specialists working in the agricultural sector. The head of state backed the idea at large, however he ordered to study this matter thoroughly. Financial incentives for young specialists were also discussed. The president underlined that salaries in the agribusiness should be decent, however he is against putting excessive pressure on the central and regional budgets through establishing new support funds as it was proposed.

“There are quite a number of rich people. Ask them to contribute a little bit to this fund, after all, we need to help peasants. You will use these funds to support specialists. Other options can also be considered. However, do not even think of tapping into the central budget. I also warn against using regional budgets,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.
