Average life expectancy in Belarus projected to reach 75 years by 2020

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – The average life expectancy in Belarus is projected to reach 75 years by 2020, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the 5th Belarusian People's Congress on 22 June, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian head of state noted that the development of all branches of healthcare is closely monitored by government authorities at the national and local level. People's ability to enjoy a healthy, active and long life greatly depends on the situation in this sector. “The average life expectancy is projected to exceed 75 years by 2020,” the Belarusian leader pointed out.

Alexander Lukashenko believes that development of prevention and rehabilitation services of the country's healthcare system, improvement of public access to emergency care, promotion of healthy lifestyle and reduction of risk factors will contribute to longer life expectancy in Belarus.

“All healthcare institutions should be focused, first of all, on early diagnosis and high-quality treatment of a wide range of diseases. More effort should be made in this respect,” Alexander Lukashenko stressed.

Public healthcare expenditures in Belarus exceed 5% of GDP, and the state covers most of them. Public healthcare is the most effective system that best serves the population. The international community recognizes Belarus' achievements in healthcare. The country was ranked 47th in Bloomberg's annual ranking of countries with the most efficient health care, ahead of the United States and Russia.
