Volodin condemns pressure and interference in internal affairs of sovereign states

MINSK, 21 December (BelTA) – It is people who should solve problems in their state, without pressure and interference from outside, Vyacheslav Volodin, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, Chairman of the State Duma of Russia, said as he addressed the 59th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union Sate of Belarus and Russia on 21 December, BelTA has learned.

This year, the Union State faced not only coronavirus infection but also attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of Belarus after the presidential election. "Our attitude to what is happening was expressed in a statement of the Council of the Parliamentary Assembly in August. We share the opinion that this is inadmissible. All issues within the state must be resolved by its people without pressure and outside interference. We consider it unacceptable that foreign states openly conduct an information campaign against Belarus, finance opposition figures, try to destabilize the social and political situation in the country,” Vyacheslav Volodin noted.

Vyacheslav Volodin stressed that within the framework of the Union State Treaty, Russia and Belarus are building relations based on the principles of equality, friendship, mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs. "Our task is to find solutions to issues that would improve the lives of our citizens through harmonization of legislation. We must work more effectively to develop the common legal space. This is a necessary condition to intensify economic cooperation, which is of great importance for further development of our countries. Trade with Russia makes up half of Belarus' total trade. Belarus is our main trading partner in the CIS,” he said.

Vyacheslav Volodin urged to create equal market access conditions for companies, to support small and medium-sized business. “The work to abolish roaming charges in the Union State is almost complete. On 1 November Belarusian and Russian telecommunications operators launched a new tariff system in a test mode. We expect that next year our citizens will pay less for telephone calls in the Union State. The Parliamentary Assembly will continue working on a draft concept to harmonize the legislation of Russia and Belarus. We need to devise model laws on the key issues and challenges of the present day. It would be right to discuss specific topics for the first model bills at the parliamentary hearings next year. These issues are a priority for us,” he said.
