MINSK, 24 December (BelTA) – The Presidium of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus has passed a statement in response to the U.S. Senate's approval of the Belarus Democracy, Human Rights, and Sovereignty Act of 2020, BelTA has learned.
The press service of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament told BelTA that on 21 December the Senate of the U.S. Congress approved an act on Belarus, which represents a heavy-handed interference in Belarus' domestic affairs in violation of the Charter of the United Nations Organization. The source noted: “Under the guise of protection of human rights American legislators are trying to put direct pressure on Belarusian authorities in a situation when fierce debates about results of the latest presidential election still continue in the United States. They proclaim they have monopoly on truth. They are unwilling to sort out the events going on in our country and hear Belarusian parliamentarians – a voice of truth.”
The statement reads that the international community has unconditionally recognized the sovereign, stable, and economically developed country of Belarus as a serious donor of regional security. “We are baffled by the eagerness of American senators to impede the development of Belarus-Russia relations, the strengthening of friendly ties between peoples of the two countries while the split in the American society is getting worse and worse,” the document reads. “The American legislators, who show ‘fatherly concern' about the Belarusian nation, should pay attention to problems of their own voters particularly amid the rising COVID-19 pandemic, to the protection of mass media freedom and the freedom of expression in the country and in their constituencies. The passing of the anti-Belarusian act poses a threat to international peace and security.”
