MINSK, 3 June (BelTA) – The U.S. ambassador to Belarus is supposed to arrive in Minsk this summer, BelTA learned from Charge d'Affaires of the USA in Belarus Jenifer Moore.
On 3 June the diplomat took part in a commemorative ceremony at the burial place of Aleksandr Silvashko, one of the participants of the famous Elbe Day. The photo of the Soviet lieutenant and the U.S. lieutenant William Robertson shaking hands became a canonical symbol of the meeting of the anti-Hitler coalition allies.
Jenifer Moore said: “I am glad to be here at a moment when our bilateral relations are improving, when our American ambassador will come to Belarus this summer and our nations will find out that we have more in common than different.”
BelTA reported earlier that this year Belarus and the USA have stated their intentions to exchange ambassadors. This is why the U.S. side has been looking for a place to build the diplomatic mission.
U.S. President Donald Trump submitted for the approval of the United States Congress the candidacy of Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Europe and the European Union Julie Fisher to the post of the U.S. ambassador to Belarus. She may become the first U.S. ambassador to Belarus since 2008. Previously Julie Fisher was deputy chief of the U.S. Mission to NATO, charge d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Russia, and worked in the U.S. embassies in Georgia and Ukraine.
