UN secretary general expected to visit Belarus in September

MINSK, 3 July (BelTA) – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is expected to visit Belarus in September. The visit was discussed as Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas met with UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki, BelTA has learned.

The meeting focused on preparations for the UN secretary general's visit to Minsk in September. The sides agreed sustainable development should be prominent on the visit's program.

Andrei Dapkiunas and Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki also discussed a number of matters concerning interaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the UN office and representative offices of UN agencies in Belarus.

In particular, the sides discussed ways to further improve work in the country in the context of sustainable development, possibilities of enhancing the current national coordinating mechanism for sustainable development, and the advisability of putting more efforts into raising the awareness about successful national programs and cutting-edge experience in this field in Belarus and abroad.

Andrei Dapkiunas confirmed Belarus' readiness to expand cooperation with UN programs and agencies in the areas Belarus prioritizes, including the achievement of the sustainable development goals and international cooperation in Chernobyl affairs.

Andrei Dapkiunas and Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki touched upon the development of tourism in Belarus. They mentioned the advisability of pooling efforts of interested international partners for the sake of fostering the development of tourism in the country, including the so-called nostalgia tourism, in small towns and rural areas.
