UN Human Rights Council's resolution on Belarus described as ‘a very dangerous precedent'

MINSK, 18 September (BelTA) – The UN Human Rights Council's adoption of the resolution on the state of affairs in the area of human rights in Belarus before the 2020 presidential election and after it is a very dangerous precedent. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the statement as part of a recording of his speech ahead of the general debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei noted that an urgent resolution on Belarus had been discussed by the so-called UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. “The resolution was initiated by member states of the European Union. They represent a majority on the council. The resolution is absolutely unsubstantiated. I have to say that a very dangerous precedent for the United Nations Organization is created,” Vladimir Makei stressed.

The official explained that in line with Article 2 of the UN Charter the organization shall not interfere in domestic competences of countries. But the resolution that has been passed definitely interferes in Belarus' domestic affairs. “Because certain sentences provide for evaluating the situation in Belarus, evaluating results of the presidential election, evaluating the behavior of various sides and so on and so forth. It can definitely be interpreted as interference in domestic affairs of the state,” he noted.

According to Vladimir Makei, Belarus and its supporters will adequately respond to this document and will take appropriate actions to protect their interests.
