Turkmenistan's presidency in CIS viewed as successful

MINSK, 19 June (BelTA) – Turkmenistan's presidency in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2019 is successful, Sergei Lebedev, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary, told the media ahead of the meeting of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council on 19 June, BelTA has learned.

“Turkmenistan is doing well during its presidency in the CIS. Over the past six months, a big number of important events under the country's presidency have been held in Turkmenistan and outside its borders. I can name the forum of scientific and creative intelligentsia Turkmenistan and the meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council in Ashgabat on 31 May. On 21 June, Minsk is expected to play host to a meeting of the CIS Economic Council under the chairmanship of Turkmenistan,” Sergei Lebedev said.

Turkmenistan's plenipotentiary Nazarkuly Shakulyev is expected to report on the results of Turkmenistan's presidency in the CIS in H1 2019 at today's meeting. Members of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council are also set to consider proposals to draft agendas of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council and the CIS Heads of State Council meetings which are due in Ashgabat on 10 and 11 October.

“The main proposals have already been submitted. I would say that the most important of them is the forthcoming adoption of the statement of the CIS heads of state on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The document is almost ready and I hope it will be unanimously approved,” Sergei Lebedev said.

The CIS plenipotentiaries are expected to discuss the activity of the CIS Interstate Emergencies Council. Chairman of the council, First Deputy Emergencies Minister of Belarus Aleksandr Khudoleyev will report on the matter. The CIS plenipotentiaries will take stock of the progress made at the meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council in Ashgabat on 31 May and discuss the tasks for the implementation of the adopted documents.

The CIS plenipotentiaries are set to consider the joint action plan of the CIS Executive Committee, the Plenipotentiaries Council and the Economic Affairs Commission under the Economic Council on the implementation of the instructions based on the decisions of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council (as of 5 April), and also proposals voiced by the heads of the delegations during today's meeting.
