Swiss representation in Belarus to become full embassy

MINSK, 16 May (BelTA) – The diplomatic mission of Switzerland in Belarus will acquire the status of a full embassy, the diplomatic mission informed in social networks, BelTA has learned.

“At its meeting on 15 May, the Federal Council decided to upgrade the Swiss representation in Minsk to a full embassy. The decision was based on the steadily growing relations between Switzerland and Belarus. The embassy in Minsk is planned to be opened officially this year by the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis,” the message reads.

Belarus already has an embassy in Bern. The press release noted that in recent years, relations between Switzerland and Belarus have become deeper. Switzerland and Belarus have since conducted a growing number of bilateral meetings on political and economic issues. Switzerland sees great promise in Belarus' economic potential and in its commitment as an intermediary for stability in the region.

Belarus has plans to appoint an ambassador to Switzerland this year. At present Belarus' diplomatic mission in Switzerland is headed by Chargй d'Affaires a.i. Pavel Matsukevich.
