Source of leaks about Belarusian law enforcement officers branded as money-grabber

MINSK, 19 January (BelTA) – Igor Makar, who stays abroad and spreads allegedly condemning information about Belarusian law enforcement officers, has previously offered the information to Belarusian authorities in exchange for a hefty reward. The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website has published an audio record to prove it, BelTA has learned.

The audio record is a conversation between Igor Makar and an employee of the Belarusian embassy in Lithuania. Igor Makar says he will provide certain information in exchange for a considerable fee.

Earlier on 19 January the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was asked to comment on whether Igor Makar, who spreads allegedly condemning information about Belarusian law enforcement officers, had contacted a Belarusian embassy.

Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz said: “We have indeed known of this individual for a long time, this is why we've been monitoring all the fuss arising from his statements with a certain degree of skepticism. We've also noticed the reaction of our Ukrainian colleagues, who went nearly as far as to launch an entire new investigation based on it. It is understandable that it was done purely due to political reasons. So, we know this person because he did contact our embassy in Lithuania in summer 2020 three times. And judging by these contacts we understand his motives perfectly well. But we've been patiently waiting for the Ukrainian side to contact us through proper channels in order to carry out an objective evaluation as they've said.”

Anatoly Glaz continued: “Since nobody has contacted us up till now, we have solid reasons to doubt their desire to be objective. There is probably no point in further waiting. We have convincing evidence, including an audio record, which unambiguously demonstrates the explicitly fraudulent goals of this man. We are ready to publish it today. As you listen to the record, I'd recommend recalling one of his statements: ‘I've always been honest and decent'.”

The official stressed that these materials had been forwarded to Poland, Lithuania, and Germany via appropriate channels. The Belarusian side is ready to respond to requests of the Ukrainian side if any are submitted.
