NUCLEAR POWER IN BELARUS AND WORLDWIDE
MINSK, 6 June (BelTA) – Slovenia, not Belarus, will take up the seat of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2024-2025 from the Eastern European Group. The vote was held at the UN headquarters in New York on 6 June, BelTA has learned.
During the secret election of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from the Eastern European Group, Slovenia received 153 votes, Belarus – 38.
The seats of non-permanent members in the UN Security Council will be taken up by Sierra Leone, Algeria, the Republic of Korea from the group of African and Pacific states, and by Guyana from the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The results of the elections were largely predictable, because everyone knows that Slovenia, a member of the European Union and NATO, has the open support of Washington and Brussels. The main goal of its nomination as a competitor to Belarus in the elections was to prevent the election of Belarus and to strengthen the position of the political West in this UN Security Council.
After all, until 9 December 2021, Slovenia was not at all going to apply for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the next two years. As of 2017, it had plans to apply for a seat only for 2042-2043.
Belarus, on the other hand, put forward its nomination back in 2007 and consistently, thoroughly explained its goals and priorities, making it very clear what it was planning to achieve by being elected as a none-permanent member.
However, as a result of cynical political manipulation of UN procedures by Western countries, Belarus did not make it to the ranks of non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.
