Seven people file papers with Belarus' CEC to get registered as presidential candidates

MINSK, 2 July (BelTA) – Seven people have filed papers with the Central Election Commission of Belarus seeking registration as presidential candidates, BelTA learned from the CEC website.

The Central Election Commission has received documents to register as presidential candidates Viktor Babariko, Andrei Dmitriyev, Anna Kanopatskaya, Aleksandr Lukashenko, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Valery Tsepkalo, and Sergei Cherechen.

Previously the Central Election Commission of Belarus published information about the number of verified signatures collected for the sake of nominating presidential candidates. Viktor Babariko has 165,744 verified signatures, Andrei Dmitriyev – 106,841, Anna Kanopatskaya – 146,588, Aleksandr Lukashenko – 1,939,572, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya – 104,757, Valery Tsepkalo – 75,249, and Sergei Cherechen – 143,109.

Signatures were collected from 21 May through 19 June. In this period initiative groups of the potential presidential candidates had to collect at least 100,000 signatures of adult Belarusian citizens, who are entitled to vote, in order to nominate a presidential candidate.

Election commissions had ten days to verify the signatures submitted by the initiative groups. Potential candidates are supposed to present documents, which are required for their registration, to the Central Election Commission from 20 June through 4 July. Candidate registration will take place on 5-14 July. Canvassing will begin after that.

BelTA reported earlier that the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus has scheduled the presidential election for 9 August. Early voting is scheduled for 4-8 August. The Central Election Commission is supposed to sum up results of the election on 19 August at the latest. If one is necessary, the second round of the election is supposed to take place within two weeks of the first ballot day or on 23 August.
