Russian senior diplomat: Russia will continue to support Belarus

MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) - Russia will continue to support Belarus following the statements by the United States about the preparation of sanctions against Minsk, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told journalists, TASS has learned.

"Of course, we will [provide support - TASS]. We are part of the Union State," he said, answering the relevant question.

Sergei Ryabkov refrained from specifying the measures of support. "The support and solutions we are developing should not be disclosed in the face of enemies. This weakens our own position," the senior diplomat explained.

The U.S. and the EU statements on possible sanctions against Belarus show the degree of degradation of the West in matters of international law, Sergey Ryabkov said. “This is a violation of the fundamental principles of international law: respect for the sovereign equality of states, the principle of non-interference in internal affairs," he said. “It is clear that all these principles of international law are ignored by Americans and the European Union that pouts when facing retaliation. This is a reflection of the extent to which Western colleagues have degraded their attitude towards international relations,” he added.

On 28 May White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said that the United States, along with the European Union and other allies, are preparing sanctions against Belarusian officials.
