Russian ambassador: No military base offers to Belarus since 2015

MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) - Russia has not made any offers to deploy a military base in Belarus since 2015, Russia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Belarus Mikhail Babich told the media on 16 November, BelTA has learned.

He called the speculations on this topic “a long political soap opera about the deployment of a Russian military base”. I can say the following: since 2015 Russia has made no offers, openly or behind closed doors, to deploy a military base in Belarus,” he said.

In 2012-2015 NATO pursued an active policy, ranging from the eastward expansion to deployment of various military installations near the borders of the Union State. “Back then we were considering various options to provide a symmetric response to those actions,” the ambassador said.

The diplomat believes that the issue of a Russian military base in Belarus is not relevant. “We need to remove this item from the political agenda and proceed from the military realities that we have today,” Mikhail Babich said.
