Rahmon: Belarus-Tajikistan relations gradually gaining momentum

MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – Belarus and Tajikistan enjoy friendly relations which are gradually gaining momentum, Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon said as he met with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Minsk on 28 June, BelTA has learned.

“The Tajikistan-Belarus relations and cooperation are friendly and are gradually gaining momentum,” the head of state said. In his words, the parties are set to sign a treaty on strategic partnership which will take the cooperation between the two countries onto a new level.

“As for our agreements after your official visit to Dushanbe [the Belarusian president paid an official visit to Tajikistan in May 2018], they are being implemented. We are satisfied with the progress. However, there is still an untapped potential in the agrarian sector, especially in crop production and cattle breeding, and also in mechanical engineering. Our joint projects [joint assembly plants in Tajikistan] operate well. There are very good prospects for cooperation not only on the bilateral basis but also with the neighboring countries of the region such as Afghanistan,” said Emomali Rahmon.

At the bilateral talks with the participation of the delegations the leader of Tajikistan emphasized the importance of friendship and mutual support between the two countries. “We attach much importance to the development of multipronged cooperation with Belarus. We enjoy close relations of mutual respect, trust and support and we value them very much. Tajikistan confirms its readiness to further political dialogue, expand trade and economic cooperation, cultural and humanitarian relations between the two states. We will also assist the expansion of direct ties between the regions of our countries and economic entities,” he said.

The Tajikistan president thanked the Belarusian head of state for the invitation and warm welcome and hospitality, and congratulated on the successful delivery of the 2nd European Games which he dubbed as “the colossal world-scale event”. “A high level of organization demonstrates how much attention Belarus attaches to the promotion of Olympic values and the development of physical culture and sports,” he stressed.

“I came to see my brother. Historically our peoples have always had warm regard for each other. They respect and love each other. Over the years we have become not only friends but brothers. As long as we live, we will be working to increase the prosperity of our countries, improve the lives of our peoples,” Emomali Rahmon said.
