Putin condemns attempts of external pressure on CIS states

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – Attempts of external forces to interfere into domestic affairs of some CIS states became a serious challenge for the Commonwealth, Russian President Vladimir Putin said as he spoke at the online meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State on 18 December, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Putin called the outgoing year a difficult one primarily due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. He emphasized the importance of the fact that from the very beginning the CIS states relied on the collaborative efforts to combating the spread of the virus. A close interaction was established between the member states. The president assured that Russia is ready to continue providing all-round support to the CIS countries in countering the coronavirus, in particular, in assisting all of them in their immunization efforts. Vladimir Putin suggested launching joint vaccine production. “We are able and willing to do it,” he added.

“Another serious challenge this year was the unprecedented attempts from outside to interfere in the domestic affairs of some Commonwealth nations,” the Russian head of state continued.

In his opinion, one of the most important documents the CIS leaders are expected to adopt today is the CIS updated development concept. Vladimir Putin deems it necessary to further strengthen cooperation in security, protection of external borders, and countering threats such as terrorism and cybercrime. According to him, joint projects in a number of areas seem very promising. Among them are industrial and technological cooperation, aircraft industry, energy sector, telecommunications, science, technology and digitalization.

In addition, Russia is in favor of deepening humanitarian ties. In this regard, Vladimir Putin spoke positively about joint thematic years of the CIS that are planned in advance. So, the next year, 2021, was declared the Year of Architecture and Urban Planning, the year of 2022 will highlight folk art and the preservation of cultural heritage, and the year of 2023 will be dedicated to the promotion of the Russian language as a language of interethnic communication.
