MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) - The defense ministries of the SCO and the CIS member states need to work together to set up a more flexible and sustainable system of security and cooperation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a video address to the meeting of the heads of defense ministries of the SCO and CIS member states, RIA Novosti reported.

According to him, the scale and nature of modern threats call for tighter cooperation between defense ministries. The system of security and cooperation should be based primarily on international law and respect for each other's interests, not on someone's dominance and monopoly.

"We consider it necessary to continue, within the framework of the SCO and the CIS, to exchange information in the field of defense policy, to share experience in building national armed forces, to step up military-technical cooperation, to introduce the most advanced models of weapons and hardware," Vladimir Putin said.

The Russian leader also stressed that Moscow values the long-standing traditions of cooperation in the field of military training and intends to further develop these ties. Vladimir Putin wished the participants of the meeting productive work and expressed confidence that the partnership in the defense sector will contribute towards strengthening security and stability both in Eurasia and in the world as a whole.
