Preparations for CSTO PA Council meeting in Minsk discussed

MOSCOW, 11 April (BelTA) – Belarusian Ambassador to Russia Dmitry Krutoi met with Executive Secretary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization - Head of the CSTO PA Secretariat Sergei Pospelov on 10 April, BelTA learned from the press service of the diplomatic mission.

"The parties exchanged views on the prospects for cooperation between the CSTO PA in the context of the chairmanship of the Republic of Belarus in the organization. The parties discussed in detail the preparation and conduct of the visiting meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly Council in Minsk on 18 May and exchanged views on the draft program of the event. Consideration was also given to other events of the working bodies of the Assembly, which are planned to be held in Belarus," the press service said.

Dmitry Krutoi noted the importance of the parliamentary dimension for the CSTO and proposed to continue strengthening and raising the status of the organization and the CSTO PA. He emphasized the need for legal settling of currently unresolved issues of the PA's activities, drawing attention to the work in model lawmaking and to the efforts to develop the legal framework for the CSTO's peacekeeping activities.

"Sergei Pospelov, in turn, pointed out that the model laws developed by the Parliamentary Assembly are taken into account by the participating states when developing national acts, for example, on the movement of military cargo, conducting operational and investigative actions and others. According to the executive secretary, up to 85% of the acts developed by the CSTO PA are implemented in national legislation. He highlighted the importance of the CSTO PA's work on election observation in the participating states and the activities in international inter-parliamentary organizations," the embassy said.

"Dmitry Krutoi and Sergei Pospelov also touched upon the role of parliamentary diplomacy in peacekeeping and conflict resolution in the CSTO area of responsibility," the press service added.
