Potential in place for more vigorous cooperation between Belarus, European Union

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – Belarus and the European Union have the potential for advancing more vigorous cooperation in the future. The opinion was expressed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Belarus Viorel Mosanu, who attended Aleksandr Lukashenko's address to the nation and the parliament as a guest on 19 April, BelTA has learned. Romania presides over the Council of the European Union now.

The diplomat stressed that Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned very important topics in his address, including international ones. Many aspects of further advancement of Belarusian foreign policy were clearly determined. “These matters were surely among priority ones for the diplomats, who were present during the event,” the ambassador noted.

A dialogue has been developing between Belarus and the European Union for the last few years. It is expected to become even more active in the future, the diplomat believes. At the same time Viorel Mosanu drew attention to events of the Eastern Partnership's 10th anniversary, which Belarus had been invited to attend.

In his address to the nation and the parliament Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that Belarus is intent on making the European Union one of its foreign trade pillars on par with the Eurasian Economic Union. Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “Like possibly no one else in Europe, today we are interested in the reformation of the European Union and its enhancement, not destruction. But I would like Europeans to hear us once again: the social and economic sphere, people's wellbeing have been and will be some of the key, fundamental components of human rights and national security for us.”
