Pompeo: The USA will soon appoint an ambassador to Belarus

MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – The United States will appoint an ambassador to Belarus soon, U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said as he met with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Minsk on 1 February, BelTA has learned.

We will soon appoint an ambassador. The ambassador will be here, and you will see that we are working to ensure your economic development, that U.S. businesses come here, and that people contribute to their community and job creation. We are ready to support you in this direction, Michael Pompeo said.

During the meeting, Aleksandr Lukashenko hailed constructive cooperation between Belarus and the United States in various areas, particularly in countering terrorism. Michael Pompeo said that the United States highly appreciates the role of Belarus in this matter. I hope that we can further develop our relations in this area, he added.

The United States will continue to attach attention to human rights, the U.S. secretary of state said. “We will continue to push for human rights reforms. We are confident that together we will achieve progress in our relations,” he said.
