PM shares details of government meeting on Belarus-Russia relations

MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) – Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko told the media about the details of the meeting hosted by the president of Belarus on 16 December to review the Belarusian-Russian relations, BelTA has learned.

The meeting was a preparation for the upcoming negotiations with the Russian delegation, led by President Vladimir Putin, in Minsk on 19 December.

“The president instructed to examine the whole range of the Belarusian-Russian relations, and to report what has been done in the past few years, how the integration agenda is developing, how the Union State programs are implemented, what decisions have been made in compliance with the earlier instructions of the president, what issues have been solved, which ones are being solved and which ones are to be solved in the future,” the prime minister said. He stressed that the issues are of a strategic nature, which means the direction the Belarusian-Russian relations should take in the coming years given the challenges the two countries are facing in the international arena.

Cooperation in industry, including the military-industrial complex, energy, investment, and a number of other sectors was discussed in detail at the meeting. “We went through the whole block of issues, presented reports, and received recommendations and instructions from the president on how to form our position for the negotiations. In this vein we will shape the agenda for the upcoming meeting of the heads of state and for the discussion of issues at the governmental level,” Roman Golovchenko said.

In his words, many issues which the two countries failed to address at first have already been solved and the relevant documents were signed. “There are still some unsettled issues connected with different estimations and different views of the parties. We are discussing them calmly. We believe we will be able to find solutions for most of them during the upcoming visit. Cooperation with Russia is of strategic importance. I am confident that the presidents will discuss and find solutions to the issues that the government has not been able to address yet,” the prime minister said.
