Opinion: West does not worry about Belarus, is afraid of strong Union State

MINSK, 9 September (BelTA) - The West does not worry about Belarus, it is afraid of a strong Union State, MP of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Oleg Gaidukevich said in an interview with the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“There is a fear there that Belarus and Russia will be strong. The formula is simple: a union with Russia strengthens the sovereignty and statehood of Belarus and strengthens the Russian Federation,” said Oleg Gaidukevich.

According to the MP, only those who are doing everything possible for Belarus to lose its independence insist that deeper integration with Russia will lead to the loss of sovereignty.

“They want sanctions to be imposed against the country, to get Belarus out of the Union State and put it under the external control of the West, like Ukraine and the Baltics. Is it sovereignty in Lithuania, Ukraine when they cannot make a decision on their own?” the politician asked a rhetorical question. “They have no fear for our sovereignty. The West does not care about our sovereignty. They do not care or think about us. They have a fear that we will be strong. The Union State makes both Belarus and Russia strong,” he added.
