Opinion: The role of small and medium-sized states is increasing in a globalized world

MINSK, 17 June (BelTA) – In a globalized and internationalized world, the role of small and medium-sized states is increasing, Chairman of the International Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives Valery Voronetsky said in an interview to Belarus 1 Channel as he commented on the initiatives voiced by Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko at the SCO summit to reduce world tensions, BelTA has learned.

“These were the initiatives that are relevant today and are very important for stabilizing international relations. Today's world is indeed somewhat destabilized due to the processes that began after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the imbalance of power that took shape at a specified time,” said the chairman of the commission.

According to Valery Voronetsky, the president paid much attention to issues of global security, cooperation between countries, strengthening the role and importance of small and medium-sized states in international relations. “Today, in the context of globalization and internationalization of both economy and international relations as a whole, the role of small and medium-sized states is increasing. Such examples are many. As for Belarus: in our region we play a significant role as a donor of stability and security. Today, we are in demand both in the West and in the East,” the MP said. He added that Belarus plays host to important conferences, forums, events, including the 2nd European Games. “This is all a contribution to stability and security, the strengthening of friendship, cooperation, and trust,” the MP said.

Editor-in-Chief of the National Defense magazine (Russia) Igor Korotchenko believes that it is necessary to look for new formats to ensure international security. “Not only Helsinki can serve as a place where European security is discussed. Minsk can be as important and even more convenient venue for holding international security forums,” he said.
