Opinion: ‘Democratic standards' imposed from abroad cannot be above national interests

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) - The so-called obscure "democratic standards” cannot be above national interests, Nikolai Shchekin, PhD of Philosophy, Head of the Sociology of Public Administration Department at the Sociology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, told BelTA.

“The state should give a tough uncompromising response to the atmosphere of hatred, blacklists, personal threats of repression, sanctions against patriots who advocate the sovereignty of Belarus. I am sure that many will agree with me that the so-called street protests have become toxic for the whole country. These protesters should not be allowed to impose their liberal views on the whole Belarusian society while carrying out subversive activities in the interests of foreign states,” Nikolai Shchekin said. “In this regard, I believe that when it comes to national security, the state should take all possible measures and not allow the destruction of civil peace. A strong state is a guarantee of the independence of Belarus. It should be able to defend itself."

According to the expert, the new reality is that with one click you can erase any person and the whole country from the face of the earth. “I am talking about a digital war declared throughout the world against almost everybody. It is important to ensure rights and freedoms within the framework of the national Belarusian state, not upon demand of the opposition who follow the playbooks of Western curators on the money of special services. It took Belarus thousands of years to realize itself as a nation and to create the statehood and the country of Belarus. The so-called "democratic standards" that are obscure to the whole world cannot be above the national interests. Attempts made by the West via social networks and various rating agencies to ‘dehumanize' the Belarusian people and sow doubt in their self-sufficiency can be stopped only by the strong leadership and political will of the national leader, which we clearly saw in August, and also by citizens who love their country and assess the situation rationally,” emphasized Nikolai Shchekin.

According to him, it is unacceptable to make experiments on the country and turn Belarus into a laboratory or an alternative liberal project, because this will destroy the future of the country.

“Now it is obvious that everywhere throughout the world we see digital corporations taking over political elites and state power, thereby putting entire states outside the law, because the methods themselves do not fit into the legal framework of the modern world community. In the United States and Ukraine the digital lobby has shown what it is capable of in terms of seizing power and reformatting the social order. Digital security is the new and the main project of survival of the Belarusian state in the future. The main task of the government and the Belarusian People's Congress is to create conditions and develop measures to counteract digital revolutions and civil wars, which will save the country and ensure the safety of both individuals and society as a whole. The year 2020 has shown that the model of the Belarusian statehood proved to be more effective than that of most so-called democratic countries, the power and sovereignty of which no longer belong to their people. Belarus, even under unprecedented pressure, managed to preserve all democratic procedures, and thus ensure stability, peace and management of the country,” the expert said.
