Opinion: Any unilateral sanctions contradict UN Charter, are illegal

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) - The House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus of the seventh convocation adopted, at its recent session, a draft resolution of the National Assembly “On the statement of the National Assembly of Belarus in connection with the European Parliament's resolution on Belarus”, BelTA has learned.

According to Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives Andrei Savinykh, the document was prepared by the Standing Committee in connection with another resolution on Belarus adopted by the European Parliament on 26 November 2020.

“The analysis of the resolution shows that it is unfriendly, borders on interference in the internal affairs of Belarus, in fact, trying to divide the Belarusian society, imposing tendentious and, let's say, openly unfair assessments of the situation in our country. Unfortunately, it calls for increasing international pressure on Belarus by imposing restrictive measures against our country, expanding the EU sanctions list, curtailing cooperation and reducing the level of diplomatic cooperation. I would like to emphasize that any unilateral sanctions are contrary to the UN Charter and, in fact, are illegal,” the MP said.

Andrei Savinykh regretted the complete unwillingness or inability of European MPs to at least somewhat correlate their statements with the objective reality. “In view of the previously adopted resolutions and statements by individual European MPs, I would like to emphasize that this document was submitted to the European Parliament and was adopted by an overwhelming majority. In this regard, we consider it politically justified to express our disagreement with the text of the resolution in the form of a response statement at the level of the National Assembly of Belarus,” he concluded.
