Nomination of candidates to Belarus' House of Representatives almost over

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – The nomination of candidates to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus of the seventh convocation will be over on 7 October, BelTA has learned.

Eligible voters who are 21 years old by election day, have no criminal record and have permanent residence in Belarus may stand for election. A candidate may be nominated through the collection of signatures, by a political party or a labor collective. The legislation provides for any combination of these means.

As of 4 October, a total of 283 persons were nominated to stand for the election to the House of Representatives.

A total of 340 sets of documents had been received by the election commissions from participants in the election race. Political parties nominated 172 potential candidates, or 50.6% of the total number. Some 28.5% of the candidates were nominated by collecting signatures. 20.9% of candidates were nominated by labor collectives.

As of 4 October, 24.4% were women candidates, 6.4% - young people under 30. Twenty representatives of the current House of Representatives (7.1%) will stand for reelection. Representatives of local councils (14.1% of the total number) will also run for the election to the parliament. As for the professional activity of candidates, the number of those engaged in industry, construction, and transport makes up 18.4%, representatives of science, education, healthcare, culture and sport – 18%, and businessmen – 9.5%.

The registration of candidates will take place on 8-17 October.

Elections to the House of Representatives are slated for 17 November, while the elections to the Council of the Republic are scheduled for 7 November.
