MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – On 23 February Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Rachkov spoke at the meeting of the General Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment during the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Winter Meeting in Vienna, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of parliament.

“In the context of the topics discussed, I would like to draw attention to the negative impact of sanctions on the socio-economic development and security of sovereign states, on the international climate agenda and on progress to achieve sustainable development goals,” Sergei Rachkov said. “Statistics suggest that sanctions hurt not only the sanctioned countries, but also the states imposing these sanctions,” he added.

Such a policy exacerbates the global economic crisis and threatens food security of many countries, the senator noted. “At the same time, the energy market is unbalanced, the inflation is escalating. The people that we represent are suffering from this,” he stressed. “I strongly believe that we all need to realize the counter-productiveness of sanctions, support fair economic competition, and assist governments in solving pressing economic problems that concern our people,” the MP added.

The Belarusian parliamentary delegation at the OSCE PA Winter Meeting is led by Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly Andrei Savinykh. On 23 February, the Belarusian delegation took part in Day 1 events of the OSCE PA Winter Meeting.
