Mogherini's visit to Minsk canceled due to ‘overlapping schedules'

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) - The visit of the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini to Minsk was canceled due to overlapping schedules, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media on the sidelines of the Minsk Dialogue Forum "European Security: Stepping Back from the Brink" in the Belarusian capital on 7 October, BelTA has learned.

“There is no mystery or conspiracy here," said Vladimir Makei. "It turned out that there are certain overlays in the schedules.”

The minister noted that Minsk had long been preparing for a high-level meeting of the Eastern Partnership. Federica Mogherini was supposed to attend it. “Unfortunately, we could not get a response from our European partners on the date of the event for a long time. When we finally received the answer, it turned out that there were certain overlays with the schedule of political events that are taking place in Belarus. We have not been able to ensure a high level of the event and the high-level meeting to mark the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership. Due to the overlapping schedules of the general political events both in the European Union and in Belarus, we had to postpone the meeting,” Vladimir Makei explained.

He believes that the event in Minsk will be held sooner or later. The date is under discussion.
