Minsk, Washington in talks over increase in diplomatic presence

MINSK, 14 January (BelTA) – Minsk and Washington are negotiating a bilateral increase in diplomatic presence, including at the level of ambassadors, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media on 14 January, BelTA has learned.

He emphasized that sanctions of any kind are a throwback to the old days and should be scrapped. “This pertains to relations with any state. If we see that time is ripe to revise certain decisions regarding the quality and state of relations, we should go ahead and do it,” he said.

Vladimir Makei emphasized the important role the USA plays in the world today. He underlined that Belarus would like to develop normal relations with the United States as part of its efforts to diversify foreign policy. One of the reasons for that are great export opportunities for Belarus, he added.

The international situation has drastically changed over the past 10 years. Back then the USA imposed sanctions on Belarus and our country had to retaliate. However, now we see that it is time to reconsider the outdated doctrines in the bilateral relations, Vladimir Makei said.

“We are maintaining a dialogue with our American counterparts at various levels. We are thinking of ways to build on this positive momentum in our cooperation proceeding from the fact that the two countries should be represented by ambassadors and should enjoy normal political and economic contacts. Indeed, we are discussing the entire spectrum of the bilateral agenda, including a possibility of bilateral increase in diplomatic presence,” he said.
