MINSK, 29 December (BelTA) – The Belarus Democracy, Human Rights, and Sovereignty Act of 2020 signed by outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump is a strange and useless document, Anatoly Glaz, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the media, BelTA has learned.
“Indeed, outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump signed the so-called Belarus Democracy, Human Rights, and Sovereignty Act of 2020 in a package with many other legislative pieces. Our attitude to such steps and to this act is quite clear and has been repeatedly voiced, including in the relevant statements of the Parliament. This strange and useless document is hardly worth paying a lot of attention to, to put it mildly, from all points of view. It certainly won't help to strengthen the sovereignty of Belarus,” Anatoly Glaz noted.
The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this is what an unfriendly step and blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state look like. “Imposing by the U.S. legislators of some democratic templates on other countries looks ridiculous as the state of affairs with democracy in the United States is very, very far from being perfect,” he said.
At the same time, Belarus remains committed to normalizing relations with the United States, both with the outgoing administration and with the future administration, but only through an equal and mutually respectful dialogue” Anatoly Glaz noted.
