MINSK, 30 January (BelTA) – Belarus is in Africa on a systemic basis, Yuri Nikolaichik, the head of the Africa and Middle East Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel on 29 January, BelTA has learned.
"Africa is generously endowed with minerals, natural resources, including rare earth metals, which large states and not only have an interest in. Countries such as Russia, China, the United States are actively implementing various projects in Africa," Yuri Nikolaichik said. “Our presence in Africa, in principle, is systemic. We cannot say that we've just made a sharp pivot towards Africa."
Belarus has been gradually increasing its presence in Africa, Yuri Nikolaichik noted. "We started with two foreign missions. Those were embassies in Egypt and the Republic of South Africa. Today Belarus has five embassies on the African continent. These strongholds generally cover the key regions of Africa, i.e. north, east, south and west. Belarus opened its embassy in Zimbabwe's Harare in 2022," he stressed.
