Matviyenko re-elected Chairperson of CIS IPA Council

MINSK, 27 November (BelTA) - Chairperson of the CIS IPA Council, the chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Valentina Matviyenko was re-elected Chairperson of the Council of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly during a meeting of the CIS IPA Council, BelTA has learned.

Her candidacy was supported unanimously.

“On behalf of the National Assembly of Belarus, we support Valentina Matviyenko's candidacy for such a high position as chairperson of the CIS IPA. First of all, I would like to thank you for the work to strengthen the role of the CIS IPA. The Parliamentary Assembly enjoys high authority in the international arena and is highly regarded by our partners in other countries. I am sure that your leadership, fruitful work to develop inter-parliamentary cooperation will continue. I sincerely wish you successes in this work,” noted Natalya Kochanova, the Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus.

Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev also spoke highly of Valentina Matviyenko's work as head of the CIS IPA Council. "The Inter-Parliamentary Assembly plays an important role in strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation between the countries. It has become an important platform for constructive dialogue and interaction at the international level. This is the result of Valentina Matviyenko's work and, of course, all colleagues representing the CIS parliaments. Various representative forums and conferences are organized, and partnerships with other inter-parliamentary organizations have been established. The CIS IPA is showing good results in the preparation of model bills. A system of monitoring and participating of international observers in election campaigns has been put in place. With the direct participation of Valentina Matviyenko, the UN General Assembly has established the International Day of Parliamentarianism. I sincerely believe that thanks to high professionalism and great political experience Valentina Matviyenko will continue to run our organization effectively. I am sure that all colleagues share this opinion."

Valentina Matviyenko thanked her colleagues. "I sincerely thank you for your kind words and for the trust you have put in me once again. I promise that I will do my best not to let you down and justify the trust that you have placed in me today," she said.

The event has brought together the heads of parliamentary delegations of the CIS countries, and representatives of CIS bodies and international organizations. One of the central topics of the web-based meeting will be the legislative support of the measures taken in CIS states to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. The MPs will also discuss the state and prospects for the economic integration and its regulatory and legal support in the Eurasian space, preparations for the observation of elections in the CIS countries in 2021, and the setting up of the Expert Council on Science and Education under the CIS IPA.
