MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) - We would welcome a more active role of the United States in Belarus, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at a joint briefing with U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo after the meeting with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Minsk on 1 February, BelTA has learned.

“We would welcome a more active role of the United States in Belarus, taking into account the significance and the role the United States is playing on the world arena,” the minister said.
In his words, Belarus is interested in the American business coming to Belarus and also in a number of other areas. “We are quite interested in the American business coming here to Belarus and working quite actively. We are interested in more active cooperation between different governmental structures,” Vladimir Makei said.
According to him, there are a lot of challenges and threats that the two countries can address together, and which can be addressed only if working together. “Today, they were discussed at the meeting of the secretary of state with the president. These issues include countering terrorism, countering human trafficking and drug trafficking and the related issues,” the minister said.
“Despite some problematic issues between our two countries, there are some areas where we have common interests and we can cooperate efficiently,” Vladimir Makei added.
