Makei: Ukraine is fully aware of importance of relations with Belarus

BRUSSELS, 14 May (BelTA) – There is a clear understanding in Ukraine that relations with Belarus are important, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told reporters on the sidelines of the high-level conference held on 14 May on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the European Union's Eastern Partnership Initiative (EaP), BelTA has learned.

“There was an opportunity to talk to Ukraine's outgoing top officials about the continuity of our bilateral relations. I discussed this matter in detail with my counterpart Klimkin, too. I believe that there is a clear understanding in Ukraine that Belarus is an important partner and that Ukraine should never expect any wicked actions on the part of Belarus”, Vladimir Makei said.

The minister was asked to comment on Russia's decision to grant Russian passports to people leaving in Ukraine's eastern region. He answered that this matter is outside the scope of responsibility of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“As for the Ukrainian crisis, we have always wanted all the parties to be sincerely interested in resolving it as soon as possible. We will always be ready to lend a helping hand to our partners in order to restore peace and stability on this land,” he noted.
