Makei: No plans to amend Belarus-Russia Union State Treaty

MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) - Belarus and Russia are not planning to amend the Union State Treaty, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media, BelTA has learned.

“The parties are still working on the proposals on ways of deepening the integration. No amendments [to the Union State Treaty] are intended,” Vladimir Makei said.

He noted that the partners are discussing ways to fully implement the provisions of the existing Union State Treaty. “Some provisions were not implemented at some points, for various reasons. Work is now underway on their analysis and elaboration of the proposals on the full-scale implementation of those provisions. The parties also need to deal with the issues that are on the surface, that we disagree or argue about,” the minister said.

In the coming days Minsk is expected to host a meeting between Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin who has been invited to attend the closing ceremony of the 2nd European Games. The heads of state are planning to review the development of bilateral relations, including issues relating to the ways to deepen the integration between the two countries.

The presidents of Tajikistan and Armenia are also expected to attend the closing ceremony of the 2nd European Games.
