Lukashenko's meeting with Trump viewed as remote possibility

MINSK, 1 October (BelTA) – In a recent interview with the Russian news agency RBC Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made a few comments while talking about the possibility of a meeting of Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and USA President Donald Trump, BelTA has learned.

According to Vladimir Makei, the possibility of such a meeting was not discussed at all when John Bolton, the then advisor for national security to the U.S. president, visited Minsk recently. The visit was a fact-finding one, a very sincere and interested conversation took place, the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs said.

“Let me explain my own point of view. Many people call John Bolton a hawk or some other names but I liked the fact the man has his own strategic vision, defends his stance and tries to understand the conversation partner's views,” Vladimir Makei noted. “It seems to us he left with a clear understanding that the Belarusian-American dialogue should continue. Although certainly Belarus is not a priority in the foreign policy of the United States of America.”

Speaking about a theoretically possible meeting of Aleksandr Lukashenko and Donald Trump in the future, Vladimir Makei said: “Everything is possible in the world. I am personally convinced such a meeting would help clarify the situation or eliminate the lingering issues in our relations with the USA that we unfortunately cannot overcome for now.”
