Lebedev has high hopes for CIS in-person summits

MINSK, 27 July (BelTA) - I hope that the meetings of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council and the CIS Heads of State Council will be held in-person, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev told the media ahead of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council meeting on 27 July, BelTA has learned.

“The issues on the agenda of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council session are relevant as always. The CIS plenipotentiaries are set to consider a draft agenda of the forthcoming CIS Foreign Ministers Council session in Minsk on 14 October and the CIS Heads of State Council summit on 15 October. The issues brought up for the meetings of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council and the CIS Heads of State Council are also relevant. Among them is a statement on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the CIS, the issue of biological security in the CIS and a number of other issues that regulate our cooperation and activities in the CIS for the upcoming years,” Sergei Lebedev said.

The chairman of the Executive Committee added: “We hope that on 14 and 15 October no restrictive measures will prevent us from holding these meetings in person. At least, the current chairman, the Republic of Belarus, hopes so, and we share those hopes in all the CIS countries,” he stressed.

According to Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei, the meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council will be timed to the 30th anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States. “For now we focus on the in-person format and hope for the highest level of representation of the delegations. A day earlier, also in Minsk, there will be an in-person meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council,” he said.

The meeting of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council is taking place in the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk on 27 July. The CIS plenipotentiaries are to discuss seven issues. They include the draft agendas of the meetings of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council and the CIS Heads of State Council, which are due in Minsk on 14-15 October. The meeting is also to consider proposals to the draft agenda of the next meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council.

The CIS plenipotentiaries are set to hear information on the fulfillment of the concept of Belarus' CIS chairmanship in the first six months of the year.

Plans are in place to approve the candidature of the head of the CIS observation mission for the elections to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation scheduled for 19 September and consider a number of other issues.
